Sports, Life, and Everyone In Between.

24 09 2007

That is insane! I am shocked at the money that is getting dumped into The University of Oregon sports programs. I agree that these things are very important but so are many other things in life and so are many other people. It doesn´t seem to be very balanced and instead quite excessive. I will be the first to admit that sports played a monumental role in the development of my character. Principles such as unity, discipline, and humility. Life lessons such as sacrifice and loss. And exposure to role models such as Coach John Wooden and Cal Ripkin Jr. who have given me the inspiration to also live an extraordinary life.

I am, and have been, privalaged with the opportunity to participate in sports my entire life. I have probably been given more of an athletic opportunity than the top 1% of americans. I would not be the person I am today without sports in my life. I am sure the same could be said for thousands of others around the world. Why would anyone, with the opportunity to give the gift of athletics to thousands, choose to only share that wealth with a select few. Imagine the hundreds of kids that could benefit from a 100 million dollar gift. It doesn´t make sense to me.

Nexpa

23 09 2007

It´s been a while since a post. Been kinda busy lately. We are on our way home from Playa Nexpa. One of the best surf destinations in Mexico. Today the waves were double overhead (holding up to 30ft. faces) with the shortest rides being over a football field long. No tubes here but some sick take offs. Crowded lineup but plenty of waves to go around. Today I logged the longest-biggest wave of my life. Juanito where were you bro. Gorgeous and insane!

We are currently in the town of Lazaro Cardenas on the Pacific Coast waiting for our next bus to Zihua and then to Cuernavaca. It took us close to 15 hours to get here but we did most of it through the night. With me are my closest friends here in Mexico; Clay, Melissa, and Amy. We will be getting back to Cuernavaca tomorrow just in time to roll off the bus and into class. Sweaty, Tired, Sunburnt and having the best time of my life.

Dia de la Independencia

My friend Carlos works downtown as a mariachi. We saw him performing tonight for Dia de la Independencia. The “El Gritto” was amazing. I totally remember watching it in high school spanish class. The zocalo was packed full. We couldn’t very close until after it was over. Here is the best picture I could get. I did get some good video of the people shouting VIVA and the fireworks over the Palacio. Hasta!

They got churches here!

9 09 2007

Church yeah I’ve been to somewhere between one and twenty churches and these are a few of my favorites. The first is the oldest church in North America. The second is a gigantic catedral in the center of Cuernavaca. The third is a crazy one in Taxco.

SK8 MEX

Making some local friends as you can see below. They gave me their shoes and board to use. I skated until I was drenched in sweat, which was about 10 minutes, haha. I suck at skating but they thought I was the greatest. They made so much noise when I did tricks, it ended up drawing a bit of a crowd around the old beat up school-yard. I highly recommend the movie Drive, My Life in Skateboarding. You don’t have to like skateboarding to appreciate this film. It is more about one man, Mike Vallely, and his tour around the world to inspire and empower the youth to take an activtive role in their community and in their own lives through skateboarding.

Taxco

This is one of the most colorful cities I have ever been to. You would have to see it to believe it. The pictures don’t come close.
